PROMO: Virtual Reality Experiences with Rock Art and Cultural Heritage with Blue Planet and Eric Hanson - ROCK ART 89

The Archaeology Podcast Network is taking a bit of a break for October, 2022. In the mean time, we’re introducing you to some of the other fantastic shows that we produce. Here’s an episode from The Archaeotech Podcast about representing cultural sites in VR.

Eric Hanson of Blue Planet is a specialist in employing virtual reality applications to the study and conservation of cultural heritage resources. He has pioneered the development of sophisticated methods to capture rock art and other indigenous imagery so that the general public and interested researchers can immerse themselves in a three-dimensional virtual gallery within the natural and cultural landscape. The technology has come a long way and the experience is now other worldly. Hanson's cutting-edge efforts allow for a 360 degree and parallax sensitive encounter.

Building the Virtual Rosewood Cemetery - Ep 185

Dr. Ed Gonzalez-Tennant joins us again in Paul's absence to tell us about the site he's been working on for many years now: The Rosewood Cemetery in Florida. Situated on private land, the Rosewood cemetery is difficult to get to and difficult to maintain. Without some sort of official support it's likely to stay that way. Ed has been documenting the cemetery using a number of recording means. This work has culminated in the virtual Rosewood Cemetery. We talk about that process and the implications regarding virtual archaeology in the near future.

Augmented & Virtual Reality in Archaeology - Episode 17

Steve Fowler, of the mobile and wearable technology development firm, Interapt, chats with Chris and Chris about augmented and virtual reality technologies, and what they mean for the future of archaeology. Steve breaks down the difference between augmented and virtual reality, and lays out the status of front-running products in these technologies. We talk about the current state of technology in the sciences, and where we see these products steering the ways in which fieldwork is conducted and presented.

Some of the questions we explore in this episode:

  • How can visualization technology improve fieldwork?

  • How can these technologies improve outreach and engagement?

  • How can technology add value to archaeology, and increase return on investment for stakeholders (taxpayers and clients)?
