You don't need a 1x1. He's a Witch Burn Him! - CRMArch 276

CRM Archaeology Podcast Icon

About 14 years ago Chris was on a project where he had a disagreement with the crew chief on how to set up a 1x1 test unit. This has now led to a discussion about the many ways you can do the same thing right. We learn when we travel and work in other areas that there are a lot of different ways to do the same thing and they are all right.

Rasputin, the Black Sun and Serial Killers - Ep 48

An archaeologist discussing Rasputin, the famous scapegoats from the Russian Revolution, Nazi symbology, and the stigmatization of mental health in pop culture? Yes, you do want to hear this.

First, we will talk about how Ancient Aliens and similar shows add to the stigma of mental health with the claims they make in their show. Then we move on to talk about the Rasputin myth, and while finding out who he really was, we learn that many of the pop myths about him are incredibly unfair. Last out, we will deal with the Nazi Symbol called the Black Sun. Some claim it's drawn from Norse sources. We will discover that's far from the case and that the neo nazi mythology circulating about it originates from a 1991 novel.

In Digging up Ancient Aliens, our host Fredrik uses his background in archaeology to discover what is genuine, fake, and somewhere in between in popular media, such as Ancient Aliens, Ancient Apocalypse, and many other places.

Mummies, vampires, draugr, and aliens? - Digging Aliens 47

Halloween is soon upon us. Therefore, we will venture into the world of mummies, vampires, Camazotz, and draugr from an archaeological perspective. So we will look at how mummies became a medicine in Europe, the Book of the Dead, and the afterlife of Ancient Egypt. Then we will talk about the bat creature Camazotz, usually depicted with a knife and a human head in his hand. Lastly, we will discuss the draugr from Viking mythology. Was the draugr a ghost, undead, or something else, and what did the Vikings do to protect themselves from these creatures?

Are there any archeological records of these beings, and what can we say about them?

In Digging up Ancient Aliens, our host Fredrik uses his background in archaeology to discover what is genuine, fake, and somewhere in between in popular media, such as Ancient Aliens, Ancient Apocalypse, and many other places.

Harassment, violence and mud - Digging Aliens 46

Something that's become more and more common on the web is the use of harassment tactics. Skeptics and archaeologists have not been spared from being on the receiving end of these campaigns, so let's have a serious discussion about this. I will look into the harassment campaign by Graham Hancock and Jimmy Corsetti and previous attacks concerning the Bosnian Pyramids and Gungun Padang. I will examine the relationship between the manosphere and pseudo-history and their draw into the alt-right speaking points.

Parts of the section are based on a talk by the president of ESCO, Claire Klingenberg. In addition, with the newly released book "The Routledge Companion to Gender, Media and Violence" and Lucy Cookes "Bitch: A revolutionary guide to sex, evolution and the female animal."

Then, we will also look into the Asaro Mudmen and see how quickly a tradition can evolve. Especially when it plays into the Western romanticization of tribal culture. Can a tradition be copyrighted, and can some practices be considered a commodity? These are all valid questions when Asaro is trying to defend a practice that originated in 1950.

In this episode:
Harassment, manosphere, and new media 3:25
Asaro Mudmen 21:30
