Aliens and Heavy Metall-urgy - Aliens 43

Weapons, something that has been driving our evolution and survival as a species. Ancient Alien theorists suggest alien beings from other worlds gave us weapons, metals, and techniques. But what would an archaeologist say about all of this?

In this episode, we will look at the evolution of metallurgy, from the earliest copper age to the invention of steel. What do we know, and how did these techniques evolve? As we will see, it was not as simple as one might think, as metalwork developed in different regions at different times.

We will also look at Katanas, and they're supposed superior quality. Are katana the definitive weapon we see in movies, or is this just modern pop culture myths?

In Digging up Ancient Aliens, our host Fredrik uses his background in archaeology to discover what is genuine, fake, and somewhere in between in popular media, such as Ancient Aliens, Ancient Apocalypse, and many other places.

In this episode:
Fire - an alien gift? (2:20)
Metalworking (8:50)
Bronze Age (16:35)
Iron Age (22:24)
Blacksmith (28:26)
The Katana and iron in Japan (32:53)
Joan D'Arc (39:48)

Deconstructing the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages - TAS 230

Lately it seems like every archaeology news article we read references the Stone, Bronze or Iron Age as a hook in the headline. We were curious, where does this come from, and is it valid to continue using it today? Join us for a deep dive on the origins of the Three Part Age system, whether it still holds up, or if it is an idea that just doesn’t apply to our current understanding of the ancient world.

My Appearance on “Wired Support: Archaeology”: Behind the Scenes - Pseudo 123

Last month, I had the great fortune of appearing on “WIRED Tech Support: Archaeology.” This YouTube video is about 15 minutes long, and I spend it answering the most common archaeology questions from Twitter. It is hosted on the WIRED channel, and the channel’s massive popularity allowed me to reach over 240K people so far since it’s release in July. Some of the questions dealt with Pseudoarchaeology, and some of my answers did not go over well with the Graham Hancock crowd! Shocking!

This week, I’d like to talk about what it’s like behind the scenes when filming something like this, and also have a bit of fun with some of the most common criticisms I got from the Pseudoarchaeology crowd. Get ready to fight back against people who never listen in the first place!

David Teaches Science Media 101 - Ruins 169

A Life In Ruins Podcast logo

On this episode, David is by himself and does not know what to talk about. So he rants and rambles about his dog lecture on youtube. Which then leads him to discussing how he edits videos, photos, and how he practices public speaking.

He talks about how he went from editing memes on photoshop to how he lights his cave scenes, and then talks about Oppenheimer and Tarentino movies and what makes them work. He then talks about how speeches and lectures are almost like standup comedy and how you can practice public speaking by making PowerPoints about what you love.

Vikings: myths, saga and reality - Digging Aliens 42

Vikings - many myths surround this era and the people of Scandinavia who lived during this time. Were they raiders, traders, or a bit in-between? Let's look into what a Viking was and what the word meant, and who could call themselves a Viking. As we will learn, it is less clear-cut than one might believe.

I will also talk about the Viking horned helmets. Are these accurate depictions? The answer might be surprising and have a strange connection to the Scandinavian Bronze Age.

Did the Vikings have tattoos, as in the famous TV show? What do we know about their body art? Is the Vegvisir a Viking symbol? And why should you make an appointment with your dentist instead of a tattoo artist to have the Viking look?

I'll also investigate why the sheep was one of the most important animals in Scandinavia and might have been the reason for the Viking raids and slavery. At last, we will learn that the Vikings might have based their society on their looks.

In Digging up Ancient Aliens, our host Fredrik uses his background in archaeology to discover what is genuine, fake, and somewhere in between in popular media, such as Ancient Aliens, Ancient Apocalypse, and many other places.

In this episode:

  • When was the Viking age? 2:16

  • Who is a Viking? 10:48

  • Vikings and horned helmets 20:19

  • Tattoos 26:11

  • Wool and Steel 34:19

On today’s episode, Jessica welcomes back Dr. Jason Younker (Assistant Vice President and Advisor to the President on Sovereignty and Government-to-Government Relations at the University of Oregon and Chief of the Coquille Indian Tribe) on the podcast. Dr. Younker was a guest on Heritage Voices Episode 73 “Exploring the Ethics in Experimental Archaeology”, but Jessica invited him back because there was clearly so much more to discuss. In this episode, we talk about how Kennewick Man and the Coquille Tribal Council set him on his path in Anthropology and higher education.

We talk about the devastating effects of termination and the important distinction between diversity efforts and sovereignty. Finally we talk about his efforts in New York and Oregon to build relationships between Higher Education and Tribal Nations in order to improve higher education for Indigenous students.
